The Karate Kid opens in theaters Friday, June 11th.
Living Sword Karate will be attending an advance screening of the movie on Thursday, June 3rd. We have a limited number of passes for our members and their families to attend this special screening.
Each pass will admit two people to the 7:00pm screening on Thursday, June 3rd, 2010. To be fair we will reserve these “Admit Two” passes on a first-come-first-served basis to karate school members with a limit of one pass per household. If all passes are not reserved by the end of class on Tuesday the 1st we will allow members with passes to claim an additional “Admit Two” pass (again on a first-come-first-served basis).
Please make a firm commitment to attend this event before reserving your pass. Be prepared to meet us at the theater at least a half hour before the screening. This is an advance screening so recording devices including cell phones are prohibited and we will likely be searched prior to admission. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.
If you would like us to reserve an “Admit Two” pass please respond to this email or sign up in class. We will hold all passes until the day of the screening so we can all enter the theater together.

Last Tuesday night we had John Hammer of Hammer Photogaphy in class to take pictures of our Tiger Tots, Little Lions, Kids Karate and Teen/Adult Karate classes. The photos turned out great and will be an excellent tool in communicating to potential students what we do at Living Sword Karate and how much fun we have with martial arts.
While Mr. Hammer was there primarily for our benefit the pictures are available for purchase from his website (www.hammerphotography.net) with a special discount for our students. Login with our email address, info@livingswordkarate.com, to view the photos. When you are ready to check use the coupon code "Family" to save 25% off of the purchase price.
We hope you enjoy the photos as much as we do.

While taking a walk recently it occured to me that the neighborhood dog are actually have the right idea with all that yapping a woofing as I pass by. That is their personal space and they are letting me know that I am getting close to it. Their barks aren't threatening but they sure get my attention.
That is exactly what we need to be doing. No, not barking at passers by but maintaining an awareness of our surroundings and speaking up when someone gets to close to our personal space. We don't need to be rude but a simple "Hello" lets them know we are there and that we see them as well. Plus is a kind neighborly thing to say. If the greeting isn't enough or if they seem threatening from the beginning as more resolute, "Stop! Get Back!" may be necessary while you move back to create some space. If they just wanted directions they can ask from ten feet away.
So, get to know your personal space and don't be shy in enforcing it. For the neighborhood dogs it would seem that their personal space extends as far as they can see. Maybe we should be aware of all those people we can see even if we don't bark at the jogger a quarter mile away.

I was struck by the insight of one of our students this Thursday during the afternoon kids class.
We build our karate on Taikyoku Shodan, Taikyoku Nidan, and Taikyoku Sandan.
- Ben Moder, Green Belt / White Stripe
Ben is absolutely right. The foundations that these three beginner kata represent are very important to our future karate ability. And just like any strong foundation these building blocks require maintenance.
it is too easy to assume that earning a new belt means that we no longer have to concentrate on the skills that got us there. After all there are new and exciting things to learn and accomplish ahead, who wants to keep going back to work on the things we've already done?
Whether we are looking only at karate skills or expand our view to school, work, or home, strong foundations are the key to success.
Thanks Ben, I was being lazy during my own class on Wednesday because I was board with doing the basics. Your remarks on Thursday were a kick in the pants that I needed to get back into my own training and work hard on my foundations.

Tickets Available
Our first set of tickets for the July 10th game has arrived. If you have already signed up and paid, we will be distributing the tickets during class. We'll hand them directly to mom/dad/grandma/etc. since we don't want these disappearing into bags. If you haven't signed up yet just talk to us in class.
Volunteers Needed!
In addition to our demonstration, we will also have a table to display information and handout flyers. Table setup must be complete 10 minutes prior to gates opening and taken down at the end of the 1st inning. If you would like to help set up, tear down, and/or talk to people at the booth let us know. We'll need to have a list of three names the week before the game so you can get in early to set up.
We are really looking forward to having fun will all of you at the game and putting on a great demonstration (practices are still Thursday evenings at 7:00)!
